What Are Full Mouth Dental Implants?
Dental Implants
The implant portion of a dental implant is a small, titanium post which your dentist will surgically place within the jawbone underneath your gum tissue. The post, called the implant fixture, integrates into the bone over the healing process to become a permanent part of your smile. This important process, known as osseointegration, is what makes dental implants unique. Other tooth replacement methods lie on top of the gum line and simply replace the tooth itself. Thanks to their design and the location of the implant fixture, dental implants replace both the missing tooth and its root, keeping the bone properly stimulated to avoid bone atrophy and its effects on your teeth and appearance.
Full Mouth Dental Implants
Full mouth dental implants use four or more implant fixtures to hold an entire arch of teeth in place. Also known as implant-supported dentures, full mouth implants are usually permanent, but can also hold a removable denture in place. Permanent full mouth implants remain in your mouth at all times and can be adjusted by your dentist. Patients should take out and soak their implant-supported removable dentures each night before going to sleep. Permanent implant-supported dentures do not need any soaking or extra care.
Caring for Full Mouth Dental Implants
Properly caring for your dental implants is crucial to their well-being. Without the proper care, there is a chance that your implants will reject and fail. Luckily, you will care for your implants exactly how you would your natural teeth. Brush twice a day with a soft brush for at least two minutes. Floss between each tooth once a day and see your dentist at least twice a year for regular dental examinations and cleanings to keep your natural teeth and implants healthy.
