Mini Dental Implants

Dr. Tony Farha - Mini Dental Implants

Couple

Since their modern day inception and first introduction to the dental market  in 2000, Dr. Tony Farha has been a pioneer in the Mini Dental Implants.

The MDI as we know them today were first used over fifty or sixty years ago, they were then retooled reintroduced to the Dental Market around 1999/2000 by IMTEC. Since that time Dr. Farha in his quest relief his patients from the discomfort of Loose, dentures started using. He was shortly recruited and teamed up with IMITEC Co. to teach this modality to fellow dentists. Through seminars and hands on courses from their facilities in Brooklyn and Staten Island to lectures on the national and international level, Dr.Farha taught this procedure to hundreds of Dentists over the last 16  years. Most of whom would go back to their communities to use this life improving procedure. He became a key opinion leader for IMTEC and later on 3M/ESPE. Where he found ways to improve and ameliorate on these MDI's.

Through his guidance and suggestions and rapidly growing  experience in that field, Dr. Farha saw the MDI evolve from one singular shape and form to several configurations and lengths and widths, increase in strength and variations to adapt to the different clinical needs and challenges.

Fifteen years later the  MDI is still a cornerstone of Oral Dental Care. We are proud to have teamed up all over again with Park Dental Research Co.  founded by the original founder of IMTEC (Ronald  Bulard DDS) to continue the road of improvement.

Why Mini Dental Implants?

Mini Dental implants are a life improving procedure for denture wearers. If you are sick of nasty adhesives and loose dentures, associated pain and many anxious social moments, then the Mini Dental Implants are your best bet.

Minimally invasive and cost effective and possibly delivered as a one Hour procedure, at Oral Dental Care.

What Are Mini Dental Implants?

Mini dental implants are ultra-small diameter (l.8-2 millimeter width), biocompatible titanium alloy implant screws, conceived and designed over 20 years ago.  The mini implants originally created the unique design of this unique dental product as a transitional device to help support fixed bridge replacements for lost teeth. Then after time, we saw that mini implants could function free standing by themselves or in combination with natural tooth supports and/or larger conventional type dental implants. This was a revolutionary concept in dental science.

Painless and Minimally invasive?

The Mini Dental Implant is one of the best minimally invasive dental procedure. A well trained and experienced dentist will manually advance MDI through the gingiva into the bone with a few drops of local anesthetics. Thousands of Oral Dental Care patients that have received this procedure describe it as pain-free. And the recovery is described by most as astonishingly painless. These patient reports are corroborated by the fact that almost all of them do not take any of the pain medications we prescribe.

And while we cover the patient with antibiotics and pain meds, most elect not to take the pain medications.

No Down time?

A minimally invasive Mini Dental Implant procedure will require no down time (if patient elects too). With the dentures now instantly secured, the patient can go back to work shortly after. For most, it's back to work the following day, with a big smile on their face, and a greater ability to eat and talk freely.

Is the Mini Dental Implant FDA approved?

Yes. After providing satisfactory technical and clinical evidence to that agency that the product was safe for public use and in fact had beneficial attributes, the FDA granted its formal consent to market the Mini Dental Implant device not only as a transitional or temporary dental product but significantly, as an on-going item.

When can Mini Dental Implants be used?

When critically needed for support purposes, and where solid bony adaptation (integration) has clearly occurred, mini implants can function as long-term supporting structures rather than as short-term or medium-term devices. In fact, some have been successfully functioning in patients’ jaws for several decades.

What’s the primary and most effective use for Mini Dental Implants?

The most effective use of this unique dental product is stabilization of a lower denture. There are approximately 50,000,000 people in the United States who are “edentulous” (literally meaning lacking teeth) who struggle daily with prosthetic devices. A majority suffer a great deal of discomfort as a result of loose or ill-fitting dentures. Many denture wearers simply withdraw from any type of social engagement as a result of being compelled to wear them. Moreover, it's not uncommon for family members to complain about a denture wearer’s disagreeable breath as a result of food being trapped and decaying under their denture prosthesis. Successful placement of the Mini Dental Implant addresses and solves all of these social and practical problems.

How specifically can Mini Dental Implants help denture wearers?

The standard insertion protocol for mini dental implants calls for four of them to be gently advanced into the front of a patient’s lower jaw. This is a relatively painless procedure that can be performed by a general dentist, requiring only a mild anesthesia. The mini dental implants, which are approximately the size of wooden toothpicks, are placed about five millimeters apart in the patient’s mandible. The patient’s denture is then carefully adjusted by the dentist to allow it to snap onto the four mini implants. The result? A tight fitting, completely reliable system that allows a patient to speak and eat with confidence. The Mini Dental Implants are placed in about an hour’s time. Because of the unique, minimally invasive procedure, the minute size of the implants, and the characteristic placement area, the typical Mini Dental Implant patient can enjoy a light meal an hour after having the mini implants placed.

What about failures with Mini Dental Implants?

At Oral Dental Care, We have some of the oldest and most extensive clinical data in regards to the MDI. We are currently in the process of publishing these data. The rate of success of the MDI is close to 95%. Strict case selection and adherence to protocols, as well as our extensive training in Oral Surgery and Implant Dentistry, ensure this high rate of success. It must be recognized that all implant systems as well as natural teeth are subject to potential failure due to natural causes, including osteoporosis, poor oral hygiene, wear and tear attrition, poor health, heavy, stressful biting habits, and lack of follow-up dental maintenance care. Mini implants similarly do not carry any actual or implied guarantee as to longevity. However, the loss of a Mini Dental Implant is a far less critical event to the patient since it may be replaced at relatively minimal cost compared to conventional implants, and with minimal associated bone or gum deterioration.

How are Mini Dental Implants different?

As a revolutionary departure from routine dental implant methods, Mini Dental Implants are so narrow they are typically inserted directly through the overlying gum tissue and into the bone underneath. Consequently the need to surgically cut and “flap” open the gum tissue, routinely required for standard implant systems, may be avoided in most Mini Dental Implant applications. As a result, post-insertion patient irritation and soreness are significantly reduced. While all dental implants require care during insertion to avoid encroaching on a vulnerable nerve, sinus or bony structures, the ultra small width of the mini implants offers a much more comfortable margin of safety.

What type surgery is involved with Mini Dental Implants?

A single, minimally invasive surgery is needed for insertion of the Mini Dental Implants. The implants are then put into immediate biting or “loading” function thanks to their “self-tapping” design, thereby anchoring a fixed bridge system. As a result, it is often possible to provide the complete mini implant service in a single office visit. Mini dental implants clearly represent an enormous breakthrough for the dental implant specialty as the most patient-friendly, cost-effective, proven dental implant system available today.

What will my first day be like with Mini Dental Implants?

A typical first day might a very typical one as most of our patients will go back to work the following day or resume their normal life routine. Uninterrupted routine.

How do I place & remove my dentures?

You are in control, you can easily remove the dentures and clean them and place them back at will. The process is quite easy. You will learn quicky (matter of minutes) how to align your dentures with the o-ball heads of the MDI and "click them into place".

What’s a typical daily routine one might expect once the Mini Dental Implants have been placed?

Mini Dental Implants are maintenance free. A normal basic daily brushing of the o- heads with a soft tooth brush and regular toothpaste. The removable dentures are daily removed and rinsed and brushed at the same time. It is very rare for patients to accumulate plaque or calculus around them.

However, our patients are asked to return to the office on a periodic basis for free adjustments and routine, free checkups.

Affordable Costs?

Mini Dental Implants are surprisingly affordable, at a fraction of the cost of traditional implants. By choosing the Mini Dental Implant, you’ve chosen an enhanced way of life free of a lot of the discomforts and heartaches of a loose or ill-fitting denture. Oral Dental Care offices are geared towards implant and other related technologies. We maintain a large inventory of these MDI’s. Our bulk purchases allow us to get large discounts on an already affordable product. These discounts are passed on to our patients. The office also has always several promotions going on, our patients can take advantage of these promotions.

What are other usages of the MDI?

We have perfected the system and have successfully started using it for FIXED crowns and bridges. In instances where the patient needs a one tooth replacement or a few teeth replaced and does not want to wear dentures or conventional multiple units bridges, we have used the MDI as abutments (just like conventional implants). In a matter of minutes an MDI is placed into the appropriate area, a dental impression is taken and our lab technicians fabricate a fixed individual tooth (or teeth) permanently cemented over the MDI. This procedure is extremely quick and cost efficient and in some instances can be done in a matter of a few hour.

Who is a candidate for Mini Dental Implants?

A patient that has lost their teeth many years ago and as a consequence have lost a lot of bone. They have been told by their dentists that they do not have enough bone for implants or were told they do not qualify for implants.

How Healthy should  the patient be before receiving the MDI?

Because of their lack of surgical involvement there are very few diseases that are contraindicated. These diseases are usually debilitating. Most patients even the diabetics and the ones on blood thinners and other chronic medications are good candidates for the MDI. However a good medical report should be taken and a consult with the patient physicians should be done if seen fit by the dentist.
